I can't stand wearing ear plugs,
I think I'm not as aware with them in as without them in.

I agree entirely, I like to be able to hear as much as I can even if there is a risk to my long term hearing. But the future of my hearing is something I'll worry about in the future, surely that's why hearing aids were invented?

You might find this worth reading:

No matter how small the journey I always pop the plugs in - after all, how many seconds does it take to do this? Once your hearing's gone, it's gone. You never get it back.

It's too late by then.

Well let me put it a different way, my dad has ridden bikes without earplugs for almost 40 years and his hearing is still fine. And bear in mind that back at the start of his riding life silencers were only just being introduced.

Any hearing damage is only likely to affect the etremities of your audible range anyway so in short I am really not bothered about wearing ear plugs and I feel safer when riding without them despite these medical findings.

My hearing is knackered.

To anyone tempted to ride without earplugs please don't. Not being able to hear what people are saying to you is horrible. Getting served in pubs/shops etc and just handing over a £20 pound note and working out how much it cost from the change etc.

In my case it is my right ear that spent to much time on the reciever of a couple of toys back in the 70s/80s that has knackered it. whenever I get a cold I am totally deaf. Nice to not hear my beloveds requests for a bit of domestic assistance but when you don't hear the phone ring and ask people to correspond by mail/messager It starts to interfear in your life.

Being shouted at because you have turned the TV too loud. Worse though is people think you are being ignorant. Your not. You just did not hear them.

It definately make you think, doesn't it.

I Stuffed up my hearing when i was younger, too much loud music all the time, only found out the damage was permanent when i went to the doctors cos i thought my ears were blocked.

You may only think that its the extremities of your hearing that gets damaged due to prolonged exposure to loud noise, and that this doesnt matter.

Well let me tell you it does.

If i talk to my wife or anyone as it happens in a quiet room with no background noise i'm fine.

If i talk / listen to talking whilst the telly is on anything other than silent, i struggle to hear every thing properly. If the kettle is boiling i cant hear much, not even the telly. If people are talking in a group, i stuggle to hear. This is because its the extremes of the frequency range that help you differentiate between sounds and where they are coming from.

I can assure you at 28 years old this really pee's me off. Now tell me it doesn't matter.

Default Look after your ears!!!

My 6 year old son has had 2 operations to improve his hearing, he was born with problems - whats your excuse????

If you want to try some ear plugs PM me and I'll send you half a dozen pairs for free.

Oh and one thing to consider - nipping to the doctors/hospital in 10 years time for your hearing sorting will probably involve remortgaging your home as the NHS will no longer exist!!!!! and your medical insurance will be full of clauses to avoid paying out.

These are not the crap ones either - Max Lites - Pro earplugs, Ive got plenty - My good weather bike is the latest R1 with 'Acrapovic' twin underseat jobs - pedestrians need earplugs when that screams past them!

You can't beat the SV on short journeys without earplugs as the noise from the micron headers through the Viper can is all part of the great riding experience and partly what gives the 'grin' factor.
