The last time the front wheel was off was about 6 months ago. I imagine that if it was installed incorrectly it would have gone well before now. I do about 200 miles a week.

Mike, it would be great if you had a spare sensor assembly. Let me know if you have one. I am sure we can sort some payment out.

TSM, the spacer seems ok. It is just that the remains of the rotor is fairly well jammed in. But it does not stop the wheel from turning.

Not necessarily, it's quite common for a broken rotor to be held together just enough to drive the speedo simply by being in place. Even though the rotor is no longer one piece, the speedo drive doesn't need much turning, so it'll often work, after a while the fretting of the broken parts will cause it to either break up completely or at least not enough to drive the sensor any more.

But you'd be surprised, every now and then I when I remove the front wheel of bike the broken bits fall out, the speedo's been working though, and of course you can't refit the bloody thing then...

I only looked a the first pic but it still looks like maintenance/installation issues.

It does look ver dry/rusty (could be wrong) and maybe over Torqued. It should be greased and for some reason(and I could be very wrong here) I think there is an O'ring in there somewhere.

My thought is there is maybe some other underlinging reasons( all all already given by other posters) why it is in such a state.

The only ones I've broken is when I've being a bit hurried with installation and also stepping on one .

Cheers
Ben

No, I mean literally miles. About 6, I reckon.

The dust you see there's bits of rotor, not contamination... The things powder up if you squash them enough (what are they made of? Whatever it is, it's weird) There's not an o-ring. Torque shouldn't effect it because it's a loose fit, you'd need to distort the bearing or spacers to pinch it and stop it working.

Does anyone here have a photo of how the sensor should be positioned in place? The Haynes manual says that the sensor should be butted with the fork lag or somewthing of the sort. The thing is I've taken the wheel off and can't remember how the thing was! What I know for sure is that its not right at the moment and not sitting flush. Its making a scraping sound too. Took the wheel off three times already. There are two extruded pieces of plastic on the sensor, do these clasp the lag on the fork? Thats how I fitted mine.

I don't have a pic, but there's a wee recess/locator pin thing going on if memory serves.

Yes exactly. I've thought that that would be the logical place for the sensor to sit.
