It's nice to see someone actually doing something about the state of our roads, just a shame that some poor lad had to die to get it started.

Thank you so much everyone for signing Callum's petition and thank you to wheel nut for introducing me to your site.

The council have a responsiblity to check our roads, a roads every six months and b roads every 12. The cover up surrounding my son's accident is absolutely unbelievable

http://www.4callum.com/newspaper.html

The council closed the road straight after the accident and the manhole cover was changed. Luckily we had somebody who took photographs of the council working on the road because this was later denied.

A conclusion was drawn up in March that my son was an inexperienced driver, no mention of his CBT or he had been off roading, I contacted a solicitor and he found out that although the conclusion was drawn in March 2004 the main witness the HGV driver was not interviewed until May 2004 and his statement continually stated that Callum had hit a defective manhole cover. (his life is also ruined and he was treated discusting they will try to blame anybody or anything except the road conditions)

During the inquest all police evidence went missing and we were told the investigating officer had had a stroke a few weeks before the inquest so he could not be questioned; my solicitor was not made aware of this until the inquest. The HGV driver at the inquest told the coroner that he informed the police straight after the accident that Callum had hit the defective manhole cover.

The coroner Mr John Pollard has drawn a narrative verdict stating my son hit a defective manhole cover. please take a look at this link

http://www.tamesideadvertiser.co.uk/...d_action_.html

It is all about a defective manhole cover i have been monitoring since Callum's accident (2 years ago) also on Bayley Street, Stalybridge 400 yards from Callum's accident spot, which again like Callum's manhole was at least 3 inches deep (75mm)The council should report and fix defects from 40mm although Tameside say they check at 50mm. I also knew that an inspection was due in aug this year and could not believe it a couple of weeks ago when it was still in the same condition, so i informed the local paper who fortunately went down and took photographs and measurements before phoning Tameside, Tameside were out there one hour later and it was fixed the morning after and are now saying that there was nothing wrong with it and it was inspected in august this year.

The same as what they said about the defect that Callum hit in December 2003, even though over 5o witnesses came forward and told me it had been in that condition for about 5 years. I have photographic evidence of the manhole cover, measurements and dates printed on the back on my photographs which i had taken into a local Tesco's to have developed.

I just need to keep the pressure on them because i don't think i will ever get this much proof of their incompetant inspections again.

Thanks for reading and please pass this around it is an issue that affects all road users so hopefully we will all re-unite. We have not had a bike since callum's accident but i have now told my husband that i give him my blessing to get another, its the roads that need improving and why should they take anybodies love of bikes away

Thanks again
Callum's mum
