steve, just check and make sure that when you book the four day course, it includes the price of the CBT basic training as well and not extra (about 6hrs training-4hr on site talk and ride, followed by at least 2hr on road session with instructor/radio contact).
dont worry about whats involved as a good training school will explain everything clearly before you even start.
keep us informed how you get on mate.

Steve..Looking to go bargain basement for such a key element as your training is for me very dangerous. I never had training available to me when I started biking and although I came through it,it could have been a whole lot easier.

Learn the right way before the wrong and then having to put it all correct again.

You know what system is in place and so by all means save a bob or two if you can, but you are risking compromising not only your own safety and ability, but the safety of others. Do it right or don't bother.

(if that doesn+t provoke a reaction I don't know what will! )

I know youve probably already sorted this, but make sure youve done your theory.

I also came back to biking late (30 something), after having a 125 when I was 17. A DAS intensive course is the way to go. If you are willing to travel I would shop around as there are a few residential course a bit cheaper than what you are getting quoted further north. A friend of mine in Leicestershire went to Bolton to do his as it worked out £150 cheaper than round here. Looking at the prices you are quoting I would say its more expensive again down south.

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciate it.

For the record I'm in Brentwood and one of the reasons I wanted to save a little cash was that I've set myself a fixed amount to get everything with, the leathers, the insurance, the bike and the training so I want to maximise the amount I can spend on the bike bit of that equation.

I learnt a long time ago that if I don't do that I'll just end up spending a bit more here and a bit more there and f**k myself over

My original Q was about the realism of training on the side and I think that's well and truely been answered so it's the four dayer for me and I'll just have to save some money with those cheap leathers I saw in Matalan for £19.99

When I got back to biking a couple of years go I had a refresher morning and started on a 125 which I found quite difficult and found the 500cc Suzuki a lot easier...

On gear I started with Hein Gericke leather trousers (£100) - ASDA George leather jacket (£50); Bullson boots (£85) and Takai helmet (£70)...

For whats it worth, I did 1 day of CBT and then 3 mornings (4 hours each) of DAS training with these folks http://www.ride2freedom.com/ in Watford. I spread the 3 mornings over a few weekends and I think that made a big difference, gave me time to go away, think about what was going on, come back to it fresh each time. I definitely wouldn't want to do more than 4 hours training in any one day either.
