Does anyone else here resent the vast sums it's going to cost the tax payer just for a little international prestige? And this last thing about the metric signs, can you imagine the chaos PLUS the expense?
.
Resent it?

No.

Its being spent in my parish.

Hmm. Hadnt heard that one... but, it sounds like a smart sort of thing to do. What is it going to cost? Sweet FA basically.
What's it going to return... well, if they did it right, good PR for the troops out there, makes the insurgents look less likable, and maybe it might result in a couple of people thinking that these lads over in their country are not so bad after all.

And, might think twice about killing them.

Maybe?

(The same thing just keeps going through my mind... the biggest recuitment drive ever done for the Provo IRA, was Bloody Sunday. If you make decent people feel helpless, and scared, they will do anything. Seeing your local Pub/Mosque blown up... it probably hurts.)

Yes, but you're getting the results straight back- more investment, better infrastructure, you'll get the facilities afterwards, job creation, more tourists (and so more job creation) and a raised world profile, which means, guess what, more tourists, more job creation. London will profit from the Olympics, the rest of the country will just pay for it.

Northy, beleive me when i say i sure as hell wish it wasnt here in london. I'd be glad if it was up your end of the world.

All those things yau say are prolly true from an economic point of view but the ordinary londoner like me isnt gonna see any real benefit.

Only bloody roadworks everywhere i guess.

Got an idea. For the 2012 games they can have Sustained Burnouts competitions

Close off Frith Street and let the games commence!!

Categories:

~Longest burnout before tyre pops
~Longest burnout before engines pops (only open to those who have popped thieir tyres)
~Longest popped tyre burnout before clutch explodes (Hall 13uk banned from this event)

more if i think of them

For teh duration of the olympisc, you're spot on... But think about it. Every road that gets relayed, every stadium that gets upgraded, every penny spent on infrastructure will still be there when the olympics leave. In Edinburgh we're still seeing the benefits of the commonwealth games in '86. (we're even going to financially benefit from the G8 riots in 2005 )
