On a more serious note, weybridge is a bit more expensive than usual I think, I did my driving test down there, didnt think motoring was that bad. But I guess going round London way you experience the worst of motoring.

Same here. In fact, I complain if it's more than £2 a pint round here.

Average for Mansfield is:
Lager is £2.25
Ale £1.70 - £2

Twas a wee bit more when i lived in Birmingham!

Hmmm wouldn't it be nice to establish a regional price table, take a couple of nationally available beers, not just locally available real ales. and establish area min/max price. then the consummer lobby can beat up the pub operators for blatent profiteering.

In manchester you can pay about £1.40 for a pint of holt's bitter but it is ****e or £3 in a "trendy" bar for a pint of fizzy slops.

Locally (Sticking to nationally available) a pint of John Smiths Smooth (Not beer, but a chemical mix that is available everywhere) is £1.80 in pubs, £1.70 in clubs. rising to about £2 in some of the more fashionable pubs. I am just glad I don't drink kiddy drinks like WKD etc. 4 times the supermarket price for exactly the same product.

Yes but you're not factoring in the regional costs of rent, rates, and staff.

rates are not appropiate as the standard business rate applies. so simply rent and staff. As I previously said, I doubt that a pint puller earns much more per hour down south than the north. Maybe £6/hour instead of £4.5 put that is recovered ion the first two pints pulled each hour.

The UBR (Uniform Business Rate) may be the same, but the rateable values most definitely aren't. That tends to impact other areas such as waste disposal, water etc. I would have thought insurance rates were higher too, particularly Employer's insurance.

Far be it for me to defend extortionate prices for Southern pis....oops! BEER, but it probably is more expensive to run a pub in the South. It's why so many of the mewling, snarling, yuppies move up here.....ruin our bars, take our jobs, steal our women etc etc.....

(when are you being abducted, Tara? ).

hey as you know I was a publican for 12 years!!

my last pub had a thatched roof and the insurance costs were horrendous..

consequently beer was £14 a pint !!!!

I sold none and went bust !
ha ha not!

serious.... there has to be margin and all costs have to be factored in- however there is also a cut off point - a ceiling price..! yes you could advertise your beer at £3 a pint and sell 10 pints with a £1 profit on each or lower the margin- lower the priceand sell more!! making more gross profit..

However- then you get into the realms of busy fools...as your overheads go up in terms of staff costs, glass washing etc..... so it needs to be a fine balance..!

Some places run cheap ale as a loss leader !!..... others price out the lower socio economic groups..

so it aint just a greedy landlord that charges what seems a high price......there may be clever reasoning and psychology involved..

and they might be steering you toward a cheaper beer with a higher margin!.... just because its £3 a pint doesnt mean they making the most money on it...might only clear a GP £ of 80p whereas a £2 pint may make them a £ 1 Gross profit... .............. its all about buy in costs and gullible customers...
