I checked out the PDF link from the Beeb site (300 pages of sleep inducing dirge) and searched for the VED rates. Bikes get an increase at the rate of inflation. Could be worse though.....

I'll find the page and post the extract.

It's on page 174:

"7.76 Motorbike VED rates and the standard rate for post-2001 light goods vehicles (LGVs) will be increased in line with inflation (with VED for LGVs rounded to the nearest £5), while Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) and bus VED will be frozen. All VED changes will take effect from 23 March 2006."

Bum!

apparently the VED duty is increased by either a pound or two depending on the size of bike. 600+ its £2 increase.

Last I heard, that tw*t of a transport minister was considering inlcuding bikes in the congestion charge. Fecking moron, it's obvious you're ONLY doing it for more money mate.

The Department of Transport says only two cars will qualify for the zero
rate of duty - the Honda Insight petrol electric hybrid, which Honda UK
says has been discontinued in the UK for two years now - and the Smart
diesel.

Smart Diesel (WTF? how come? )

The idea of the zero charge cars' road tax being wholly subsidised by those who pollute more is ludicrous. Yes, of course emissions and engine size should come into it, however, the primary purpose of road tax should be to fund new roads to deal with increased volume of traffic and maintain the existing ones. Doesn't matter if a car sucks in pollution, it still takes up space on the road, contributes to jams, accidents, etc. and wears the road surface, just like any other vehicle.
