It realyl depends on your sprockets. If you're running with an alloy sprocket, that's your limiting factor for the lifespan on the set so there's not much of a downside to running a smaller front one. If you're running steel all round, then either the chain or front sprocket will probably be the first to go, depending on your maintenance, so accelerating that wear maybe isn't so clever.

At the end of the day, it'll be marginal. Myself, I'd want a HUUUUUGE rear sprocket so eveyrone could see what a low-geared stunt-happy loon I was.

I tell you something, I'd love an SV with dropped final gearing but a higher top gear, overdrive basically. For when you absolutely, positively have to go a very long way at a moderate speed

Northy,

don't forget i know nothing from what you just said

is mine good/bad/indifferent?

i want a decent improvement but without too much cost (initial) and/or increased maintenence

I reckon the impact on miantenance etc is low enough that unless you go crazy, you won't care. Past that, it's personal preference. You're not going to wear out your sprockets in 15 minutes just because of a 14 tooth front, put it that way. How long it'll really be? Quality of maintenance and of parts will probably make more of a difference than the number of teeth.

But do bear in mind I don't actually know, and this is all an elaborate bluff. Since I use a renthal rear and a scottoiler, nothing else in the setup really matters, the Renthal will always die first.

yeah, i know what you mean, i'll be getting a scotoiler i think, and generally looking after my chain a bit better than this one ( have you all seen the pics?)

14 tooth front it is then

anyone recommend(sp?) a setup?

who's the best/value for money out there?

(i'm a skint student don't forget)

Yes me too, that would be an excellent solution.

is it not possible on a motorbike like a push bike?

would you end up with esentially two gearboxes?

one front and one back?

would the stress be too much for a byclce style setup?

it would be much easier to build and operate by just adding a couple more gears in the transmission... say an 8 speed, starting at a lower gear ratio and ending at a higher one

The rear sprocket's easy to do, the front a total b*stard apparently. Best to order one and get a recommended bike place to do it for you - should take them about 30 minutes I would think as the rear wheel will have to come off to allow enough slack in the chain for them to remove and replace the front sprocket.
