Only reason its l;ike this is because when your by yourself you can hand signal, but if you have a passenger on the back you need both handles on the bars.

Something to be aware of is that whether or not it's the law isn't the only consideration. Fraser will be able to explain the technicalities of this a bit better, but from what I understand, comparatively few police are trained as "vehicle inspectors" (don't know the exact term). Aside from obvious things everyone knows about like tiny/not present number plates etc. the police officer stopping you will sometimes, unless they are one themselves, have to call out a vehicle inspector to clarify whether or not something is illegal and if so, what the penalty is.

There was a case on a traffic cops program a while back, where some poor lad on a race/track day bike (think it was an R1) with no indicators, lights, etc. was stopped. He insisted it had a daytime MOT/was legal, but the police weren't having any of it. They stopped him whilst it was light, but by the time the inspector got out and Ok'd it (after some tutting and "whilst it's not illegal, it's certainly dangerous") it was dark, so it would be illegal for the bloke to ride it! He ended up having to get some mates with a van to come and collect it (doubt he wanted to leave a rather trick bike without a chain/alarm by the roadside overnight).

So, ask yourself, how much would it annoy you being pulled all the time and would it be worth it? (not saying it isn't, just something to consider)

What happens if you are using a "daytime only" vehicle and it gets foggy or rains hard? You are suppoised to use lights in severely restricted visibility I thought.

There's a guy who works at the local garage near my work who has a modified Fireblade, no lights or indicators. I asked him about it and he'd already contacted the police when he modded the bike.

the police had said that it was OK, signalling by hand and as long as the bike was used in daylight and good visisbility they wouldn't do him. This is up in aberdeen mind, other forces may take a different view on this. They seem a bit more relaxed up here about that kind of stuff, although the stealth bike they have is a bit nasty!

As for the MOT, I'd been checking this as I was after the integrated rear light/indicator that does away with the stick-out indicator stalks, that site had the MOT check list on it for indicators and the important point was that the indicators must work as described by the MOT "if fitted"

So if there's none fitted then the bike would pass.

the great fact is though if you get stopped and get given a vehicle retification notice then when you take the bike to be checked out it will be fine even though you havent had to put the cators back on
Thats my understanding, switch and wiring.

It's all here regarding MOT requirements.

MOT checks - direction indicators

To sum up. Indicators must be fitted to any machine with position lamps fitted, with the exception of machines pre-dating 1 Aug 1986 and mopeds. Must flash on/off at between 60&120 per minute. They must be visible from the riding position or a tell-tale light/buzzer fitted in addition.

If not fitted (or only front or only rear fitted) the machine is declared a daytime/clear visibility use only machine.

Interestingly, there is no mention of E-marks as a requirement for an MOT inspection.

I often use hand signals on my SV (no, not that one). It's a clear, unequivocal statement about what I intend to do. Very useful for reinforcing your signalling of your roundabout exits. Even when turning left, sticking your arm out tells anyone waiting in that junction what you're about. After all, you don't leave your arm sticking out and forget to cancel it. Do you?
