Well I would love to have a card like that right now. My son has just hit 16 and drives me to despair, which unfortunately leads me to be on his case far more than he would ever realise I like to be.

Peter - now you make me sad. My 9 year old always draws me lovely cards and they have motorbikes on the front - I do wonder how much longer I have before she stops. Guess you just have to enjoy it while you can.

It really is very sad how cruel kids can be. I was just a complete nutcase when until I was 20, other than that fairly considerate. My brother... was less so. And my sister went through an unbelievabley selfish phase in her life.

And, since my mum is in a wheel chair with MS, all of this landed squarely on my dads shoulders. And now I fecked off the the bloody US as soon as I turned into a slightly less suicidal fruit cake.

Now my gf is all set to get started with the kids thing ASAP. Oh dear.

Missed that actually. Fair play with the perspective young'fla.
That was always one of my great difficulties. So we tended to gather together and draw massive bombing raids of villages, with a suprisingly large number of Nazi planes now that I remember.

The good thing about drawing planes and things in the sky, is there can 4 of you facing the sheet of paper from differant angles, stick in your plane, and you were just just doing loop the loops.

You had to take care with the parachutists though.

I think it's a 'being 16' thing, my daughter is exactly the same. Some days I seem to do nothing but moan and nag at her. I love her to bits, but at the moment I really don't like her very much. The only thing that gives me hope is that her two older brothers were exactly the same, and they have turned out ok. Guess you just have to try and put up with it until common sense finally kicks in and they become human again

Lissa....Your words offer great encouragement as you explain so well this tough phase we are going through. Lee actually turned around and said to me the other day,"Dad you only talk to me to tell me off." I was gutted. This is not how I want it to be.

Believe me I get all of that as well (and he is only 9) which is partly why the card surprised me so much. It just proved to me that the little toerags can still feel 'wanted' and loved at the same time as being little ba*tards.

Yesterday he was moaning that I don't play with him often enough. But if you analyse it mor closely it was only because there was nobody in the street to play with at that particular moment. As soon as another kid comes along I am dropped. Kids are fickle and do and say things without necassarily thinking about the potential hurt caused to others. Dad's are experienced adults and we have to remind ourselves sometimes what we used to say and do when we were younger in order to get a sensible perspective on things.

I'm not going to get into it but I recently went through a sh*t load of issues with my 24-year-old stepson but it all boils back down to the fact that even at 24 the kid is is still a kid without a great deal of life's experiences and that kid is still going to wrench the same emotions out of you as a 9 year old.

That I suppose is what being a Dad is all about.
