"No problem" Sounds like a problem to me The rear shock's a not very good, low fluid volume Kayaba, and it's not well specced either as far as the damping ranges and curves go. At least, that's my evaluation of why the rear end's so crap- and I reckon that most of the bike's foul rep comes from the rear. (sounds wrong, doesn't it? But slappers under acceleration very often come from the rear, which weights and unweights the front) FWIW, Max MacAllister (who owns Traxxion) reckons the same.

Does the nice Showa off the new model fit? Any bike with aggressive geometry can slap if you wheely it off a ridge, mind.

I mean no problem as in it can do it easily - but it definitely isn't desirable!

The boys on the Ninja forums hate me because they reckon I moan about the bike all the time! The rear spring is an absolute disgrace and the bike should never have been sold in that trim. Even the dealers recommend fitting a new rear shock and steering damper and you don't expect that when you buy a new bike.

They say it is set up for the track but in many reviews they say it is too hard for that too and besides it should be set up for the road in stock form. On a smooth dual carriageway with smooth roundabouts it is pretty good but it is head shaking all the time. I used to get worried when it happened on the SV as it was so rare but on the B2 it is almost everytime you change gear whilst riding flat out. If you only ride on smooth roads like that then I reckon it has to be the most thrilling non-litre bike going.

On really bumpy roads you could ride quicker on the SV as your back wheel would spend all its time in the air! You keep getting bounced up onto the tank under engine braking and seriously busting your balls!

The front end damping is the dogs bollox though. Steering is dead quick and sharp too which does contribute to the shakes a bit. I could fix the bike with a damper and new shock or buy the latest model where it is fixed as standard....although apparently lacks the edge/sparkle/character that the B1/2 has. Planning on upgrading in March if finances allow.

Ok, the B1 is a handful On the other hand it could never be described as boring If a mad race rep is what you want go for it The reason that you get headshakes on it is that the back is so hard. You can respring it which will sort that. I have never gotten round to it and have simply backed of all damping on the rear which stopped the headshakes. I have a bridge/corner/crest/bumps (over the Wisp heading for Sherifhall, Northy) where I could make my SV shake it's head but the ZX wont since I sorted the suspension.

The 05 (C1) is a better bike in that the handling has been calmed down and is not so much hard work to ride: you can go mad on it or you can just cruise. The B1 is just mad all the time. You can also pick up second hand ones for less than £5k which is a bargain. Go test ride both.

Someone asked on SV Rider... "Surely the 636 shock should be ideal for the SV- the 2 bikes are similiar weights, so the damping should work". Good theory, but the damping doesn't work for the Ninja either I do like 'em though.

How much will it cost then all-in for a damper and decent rear shock?

Trouble is I then run into aggro with setting the new shock up just right...

I reckon an upgrade in March would cost me £1500 to £2000 if I get £3500 for mine and a new C1 is £5000 to £5500 depending on pre-reg or not.

Haven't a clue mate. Depends what you get. Speaking to Scooby Drew, I think the newer shock ought to fit- well, doing a wee bit of lateral thinking, it fits an SV And it's so much better it's not even funny. Proper big Showa, more adjustable and valved sensibly in the first place. Never actually ridden a bike with one in mind, speaking from reputation. But if that's true, then they'll be in demand by B owners that want to upgrade.

Ohlins shock, something like a GPR damper? About £700-800 all in. Shock would do most of it. Or you could fit a damper without the shock, if you want to bodge it.

And all the scary reasons above is why I love the damned thing Im strong enough to keep hold of the bars to not let a tank slapper start.... but its mad when you open up the throttle hard.... the front does shake a tad till over 120mph.... though Ive not touched suspension from whatever previous owner had done to it..

Idea! This is, be warned, quite possibly completely half-assed. B2 shock fits in an SV. GSXR SRAD shock is softer and fits in an SV. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that it'd fit into a B2, no? Maybe. If you're lucky.

You can respring the shock and have the bike suspension set up for about £120. That apparently sorts it.

Still basically a cr*p shock though, even with that. Though at least it'd not be a bad shock set up by an 8-year-old
