Thanks for your help, it was invaluable.

Just to check, if it's a stock shock is it in the right way round. Has everything been cleaned up? LAst time I was helping replace this lot on a curvey it was all quite snug but didn't require any force....

It's not a stock shock, it's a gixxer shock. The shock is definitely the right way around. Everything is fairly clean.

But I did try to test the theory using the fat end in the stock shock and it wouldn't go there either which makes me think I've got it the correct way around.

Ah, ok, so we are talking about items #7 on the parts fiche … I’d guess/say the bearing (#2) has moved to one side. Did it take much force to remove the pin/spacer (#6)?

The spacer comes out easily and as a test I took it out and tried to insert it into where it should go with the washers on either side. It doesn't even fit with a single washer.

Weird ... how far is it 'out'?

The spacer slides all the way out as you would expect. The bearing is in there nice and tight.

No I mean with the spacer extracted and lining it up as you did i.e. where it is supposed to go with the washers, how much will it not go in by?

Ah, it is the perfect size with no washers, therefore even 1 washer makes the overall length too much. If I were to reverse the linkage so the fatter bit goes into the bottom of the shock, the linkage is too fat, never mind the spacer which is a fraction wider.

That is very weird then … but if it came out, then it will go back in again … even if it does require a big hammer

Not much help that really ... but the washers are there for a reason ... I'd not be happy to reassemble without myself ..
