But would fuel cause the rev counter to play up?
i reckon an intermediate electrical fault that comes and goes with movement or a coil starting to break down is more likely. On mine the loom looked fine from the outside but the three individual wires had chafed against the dozen other wires inside the sheath. It started as an intermittant misfire and got worse over a couple of weeks.Having identified roughly where the problem was with a multimeter,I could affect it by prodding the loom. The cure was insulating the offending wires individually and wrapping up the loom in tape.

Yes, I forgot about the indicated revs dropping. Damm. So I suppose fire it up and move the loom about to see if there is any effect, I hadn't noticed if it was front or rear cyclinder that was playing up, looking at my Haynes it looks like the tacho fed off front coil, if so that would be the first place to look. How much does a coil cost? and do I need a genuine suzuki or can I buy a cheaper pattern part.

Damm Damm Damm, why is nothing simple

Personally I would start by checking the plugs before digging any deeper.
