Ok, when you open the throttle, it opens each of the carbs or throttle bodies at the same time by the same ammount (All thngs being equal) what can happen is that one or more carbs / throttle bodies can end up running sligly ahead or behind the others for this given ammount of movement. This happens slowly over time because of wear and voodoo. The act of ballencing alters the connection between the throttle cable and each of the carbs / TBs so that for a given level of throttle they are all working at exactly the same rate of airflow. The measurement used is a vacume gauge for each carb / TB to see what the pressure difference is before the fuel & air enters the engine for each one.

The most common point to show this needs to be done is a vibey, slightly poor running at lower revs. It should be done every major service IIRC (Around 8,000 miles)

Feel free to correct any of the above if I am wrong.

I'm thinking of putting silver sand in my clip-ons as the vibes really get to me about 40 min in to a ride (fractured my 8th vertibrae a while back which still causes me some gym now and then).
But a couple of thing have stopped me
1) I can't find any in a decent state and quantity
and

2) I think that loss of feeling has more to do with poor blood circulation than the vibe (although this will eventually lead to white finger etc), so I'm going to move my levers down slightly and see if this helps
Read on the site that it has helped loads of people, and I remeber someone saying that the bolts were made out of chewing gum so watch the threads!

Could increased vibes be put down to tougher springs as well?
Any thoughts?
