The hard shoulder is coned off, but **** all work going on most of the time- the specs cameras on the A1 are FORWARD facing.

I think they're all forward facing so they can see who's driving the cage

There's a single rear facing camera on the M1 before the specs zone starts, don't know whether it's to monitor traffic flow or get your bike reg?

Either way it's usually 2-3 lanes of solid 40 ton blocks of metal doing 40- so you're not going anywhere in a hurry. May as well take it easy and , if you've got a flip top lid, light a fag

How cool would that be.....glance over at the suited totty in her Audi TT, give her a nod, and light your ciggy as you ride along.

shame I don't smoke

To be honest, I've been through loads of these on the M1, M6, and plenty of other places (in the car) and (touches wood..) never had a problem.

Do they actually work? I'm not saying they don't but I usually drift through these between 40 and 60 and not had any worrying letters through the door. Are they supposed to issue a normal NIP for going above a 40 average along the section of the route then?

I just can't see how they would work unless a computer is tracking every single number plate to calculate your average speed - someone will tell me in a minute this is exactly what they do! Surely the cost of putting these up is more than they recoup in fines?

Cheers,
Matt

SPECS work on front plates only. They are not HO approved for rear plates. If there's a contraflow, you will see apparently rear facing cameras monitoring the contraflow lane from the front.

Correct - that is EXACTLY how the system works. It is called ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) regisiters you reg at the start and again at the end, calculates the average speed and automatically raises the NIP. It can also check your Tax, Insurance and MOT.
Do they actually work? 3,533 people so far can answer that for the system on the road works on the M1 for the multiple occupancy lane (that's 70 a day being caught)

Right, I'll slow it down then! (as I said, its not like I cream through at 90 but generally average around 50 in a 40 I reckon). For this reason, I assumed they didn't work but I must have got lucky so far

Do these have a similar tolerance to other cameras then? I generally assume I can get away with about 43-44 if the road is completely clear in front of me,

Cheers,
Matt

Might do. Sadly I don't cruise the motorways at 73 - 74 when I am riding late at night!
