It would be interesting if someone were to dig out a long lost clause in the original income tax legislation which if I recall my history correctly was brought in as a temporary measure to finance the wars against Napoleon. This clause stating that the tax would only be levied for a limited period and that effectively 200 years of income tax was illegal!

Of course refunding it would probably bankrupt the country so they'd probably have to introduce another tax such as a 100% tax on tax rebate windfalls

Although I hate paying tax and think my own £1000 a month is excessive, I have to admit that I have never had anything but politeness from the tax people themselves.

I have also "used" them to my own advantage when I realised my son was being ripped off by his employer. He was being paid below minimum rates without a pay slip etc. My real concern was that he was expected to use machine tools and could possibly not be on the books and therefore no insurance etc.

So a chat with a friend at the tax office, and a quick check of my son's record showed him not to be currently in employment. So a surprise visit to the industrial unit picks up 4 lads including my son working for "Cash in hand".

So the lad comes home saying that because the tax had raided the place they were all going to be sacked and it was my fault for telling George. No his weekly wage goes up by £120. Still working on getting a P60 for last year, but at least he is now covered by insurance.

Whilst the tax system is a pain in the ****. The tax man can help weed out bad and illegal employers, even better is that once one is discovered. They tend to be held on a short reign until they can demonstrate they have really changed their ways.

Nice thought but very very very inaccurate. Trust me, tax has been legislated for a very long time - you may not be aware of the statutes but somewhere there is a statute which overrides the limited period and means its been perfectly legal. :P
