Northwind may not be a mechanic/tyre dealer but there isnt much he doesnt know. He is very much considered as an expert in all things bike related!!

Same on my Z6's. Direction arrows point the right way, so that's good enough for me!

(actually isn't the Diablo the same tyre as a Z6 anyway)?

More or less, though you mean the Diablo Strada, since just Diablo covers loads of different tyres.

Just had a pair fitted myself, and I started giggling when I realised that not being able to go round corners for the last few months was because of the worn tyres, not my lack of ability.

I've got some game, but if anyone's taking my word as gospel they're out of their minds

rear tyres mostly need to grip the road *behind* the tyre; front tyres need to grip the road in *front* of the tyre. the tread pattern is designed to clear the water from where the tyre needs to grip, therefore the tread patterns will often look like they're the opposite way around between front & back

weazelz, i guess i just need to see it in action to see what you mean. i can't see the bit about the back wheel, but the front i could *possibly* understand - if it locks, and is sliding forward, you would want it to slide with the backwards pattern to clear water as it goes - possibly

i'll not pretend to know anything about it, and as others have said they have it too, i'll shurrup

edit: the front wheel thing would apply if the rear wheel is spinning, actually. if this is the reason it's a weird one, perhaps it's due to less popularity of abs/traction control compared to cars (where i have more experience!) - obviously their tyres are meant to clear the water as it rolls rather than as it loses grip. on a bike i'm guessing it's a lot more important to increase the chances of regaining grip, if you have lost it...?

think about where the rubber is compressed under the tyre when it's trying to grip - towards the back of the contact patch on the rear when accelerating, & towards the front of the contact patch on the front whren braking. rather like starting blocks in a running race, or digging your heels in to stop yourself being pulled frowards
