I did a bikesafe day with Kent police at the end of august & agree with glade that it’s highly recommended. The Kent one was £55 (to cover admin fees). There was huge range of ages, from 19 year old to 69 year old, bikes: from classics, sports also there were several women there too, so it is for everyone & I think everyone who went, came away with more skills than they went there with.
The day was a similar setup: tea & biscuits & a chat with the other bikers. Then into the classroom for about 45 mins for the cop’s presentation, some photo’s, statistics & a general talk. The police were all friendly, down to earth & bikers in their free time as well. Then out onto the road, 2 riders to one policeman, (they try to match the riders by experience, bike etc) the cop being in the middle of the two, there was no radio comms between any of us, if the cop wanted to take a turn, he’d put his indicator on, its up to the rider in front to observe his mirrors enough to see this & make the turn. If the front rider doesn’t notice the cop & rear rider make the turn, & just wait at the junction until the lead rider realises he hasn’t been checking his mirrors enough & double backs. (we were told a story of a tunnel visioned Hyabusa rider who didn’t make a turn & was never seen again) but this shouldn’t be a problem, it sounds a bit scary but you get used to checking & no-one missed a turning all day. Every so often we’d pull over have a 10mins or so debrief on the lead riders ride then swap lead riders. We stopped of at Wesson’s (see the café guide) for lunch (which was included in your 55 quid) over which we all chatted about the ride & heard a few stories from the cops. Then back on the rode to make our way back to the police station, riding in the same manor as before. Once back at the station & quick debrief on the whole day. You get a write-up on how you’ve got on during the day. I even got a little goodie bag at the end consisting of t-shirt, pen, lanyard, side stand thingy etc. To conclude: well worth it |

I did the Bromley BikeSafe about 3 months ago, it was very good. Also you get to go out twice once in the morning and longer in the afternoon.
All good fun. Ch00

I did mine with the Essex police, they do charge for the day but I felt that it was good value given the quality of the instruction. They pre book hot meals at a cafe in Burnham within the price of the day. We rode for about 85 miles split about evenly before and after lunch.
Strange feeling with the police in the mirrors for most of the day. |
