I would go with the compulsory headlights all the time - why would you not have them on?? I sometimes get people telling me lights are on when in the volvo - but I cant turn them off

All new bikes have to have diped lights on at all times when the ignition is on, why dont all new cars?
Personally, I think automaticsuperdupersafetywhatchamacallits are making things worse. People just don't think for themselves anymore.
Agreed.

Plus, automatic lights can be confusing for other road users. I was following a big Merc a while ago that had automatic lights - it took me a while to realise that though cos it was broad daylight and they were coming on every time he went under a bridge / tunnel - I thought he was braking at first, then the penny dropped when he went under another bridge.

There's 2 schools of thought on that one. and I'm not sure which sits best with me. I'm going to be lazy and link to another site though rather than retype it myself!

I like the difference between bikes having headlights on and cars having less.
I liked the dim dipped headlights, but that seems to have gone out of fashion. I am all for a daylight running light that's less than headlights for cars.
Volvo for me too, like my bike day or night I don't have to put lights on (but I can turn them down to sidelights which become parking lights)

I'm going to add a bit of balance to this thread! - I saw a CBR this morning trying to squeeze through gaps that were barely visible and he hit a wing mirror (don't know if there was damage though).

Then I saw a bike moving from the right to the left of a four way carriageway just outside Hyde Park, with his right indicator blinking. Cars behind him were flashing and beeping and he/she appeared oblivious!

Anyway, as this is a motorcycle forum, I'll jump on the bandwagon....bl00dy cars and their lights/BMW's <spit>

The french biker marched against all cars having lights on permenantly as one of thereasons that bikers are more visable is because they have their lights on.

As soon as everybody has their lights on the bikes stand out less
