The line is that it's not theft it's copying and in legal terms it's copyright infringement but...

You wouldn't steal a car...
You wouldn't pimp a ho...
You wouldn't commit copyright infringement against a multi-billion dollar levaiathon

...doesn't have quite the same impact so they call it stealing for the adverts.

Also bike theft is crime against the person and copying a file is not.

Yes, theft taking something without the owners permission, i.e. walking into hmv and taking the dvd off the shelf. It physical and a physical cost attributed with it, i.e. media, etc... hmv would of bought the dvd off a supplier etc....So they will have lost money over a theft.

However, this is copyright infringement which is not theft (No matter how hard the studios try to tell you otherwise), because nothing has been physically stolen. A digital copy has been made, but no one in the chain has made a loss because of this. However, there is a potential for loss if you would of otherwise bought the film.

2 things are killing the film industry.

Differing Release dates and Expense.

By releasing things, sometimes months apart (I have seen films available on DVD in the US before they were released here in the UK in the past)

Also the cost of cinemas (commented on in the thread earlier this week about which film to watch)

This is why if you go down the street in Brixton, you will get people offering you DVD's of "new" films, because a poor quality affordable film is better than an expensive cinema trip (think of a family of 4 going to see the latest Disney epic)

For me, if there is a film that looks interesting, but not that interesting I will often wait for the DVD - in the end it costs the same as the cinema if you are talking about a couple, never mind a family.

Now if they were to release a movie on a Thursday, then release a limited DVD the following Thursday (limited in that it is EXACTLY what you would get at the cinema - trailers, ads, movie, not extra making-ofs etc) for £10 then piracy would die.

Anyone who wanted the movie could buy a guaranteed quality product to take home, and at £10, the pirates selling crap quality couldn't really make a profit.

The Cinemas wouldnt lose much business as I dont care how much you have spent on your home cinema, its not the same as going to a cinema.

The damage that downloading movies does is that people download the movie, watch a poor quality version (so special effects etc dont really work) but get to see that the movie is NOT worth watching, so DONT go and see it - mobile phones have the same effect as people leave bad movies and phone their friends, warning them away.

Oh the other killer of cinemas - people who think its an extension of their living room and that they can chat, use mobile phones and generally be anti-social.

I still like the cinema, but not THAT many films are worth the cost....
