I'd think again if I were you !!

If the reg / rec is fried (like my VFR one was until today when I fitted a new one ) it means that the battery won't charge correctly (mine was charging @ 11.5 V with lights - 12.5 without).

I'm surprised that an SV only gets 8 miles - my VFR got me 38 !!

ANDYB - If your commute does not involve much in the way of traffic you might be ok to get home. If it does involve traffic then you can help by winding the idle speed up to max & just try to keep the revs as high as possible without destroying the engine !!

As for RELAY - well I'm with the RAC & on 3 occasions they've taken me (and the bike) home - I thought that was the definition of the cover ?

Thanks again guys, my commute involves a ride @ 60mph for 30mins so hopefully I'll be able to get most of the way home. I'm thinking of asking the missus to follow me home then if I do get stuck she can sit behind me with the hazards on!

Hovi5, with the engine using the battery (spark plugs at least), plus lights. It uses power from the battery. Without the reg/rect, the charge is not put back into the battery. It's only a matter of time.l

Supervox, I'm not sure why it only got 8miles, but it was brand new from the dealer, and they'd forgotten to plug the Reg/Rect in, so I know it definately wasn't working. Could of been a partially charged battery I suppose, but I still like to think of it as having a shorter range than a longer one.

Spot the difference ???

In your original you didn't use the "&" - this little word changes the whole meaning of the sentence !!

If the battery is fully charged then you're probably right - it should last the journey home - especially the sort of journey that has been described.

I THINK
1) Stop shouting.sorry......mother was vacuming
2) If the rectifier if fubar'd, you'll be good for 8 miles before the battery is flat (applies specifically to pointies, curveys don't have FI, so may run a little longer, but not that much).
