Ohhhhh really dodgy ground there mate.

1) He cannot use any of the info he would find as to disclose where he got it would leave him with little "moral highground".

2) Its illegal to access another persons account without permission, and computer misuse is REALLY frowned upon these days

3) Is he sure he REALLY wants to see whats in her inbox? Real can of worms there.

It IS impossible to "crack" a Hotmail account password - the standard password crackers wont work as it will more than probably alert Microsoft if there are too many failed logins on an account in a given period and will more than likely lock the account too.

My advice is to ignore the technological aspects of things and he should just sit her down and talk to her.

Have my wife's hotmail passwords (multiple account) so not an issue for me, she gave them to me (I often check her email for her as she cant from work sometimes).

I know mate. point 3 - that is the 1st question I asked him. I have never done anything like it in my life but I sort of feel for him. I doubt it he would ever consider it as an evidence. He has 2 kids and I think he just wants to be sure she is having an affair before he does anything silly. This is one of the things we could discuss over a pint all day along. Doing it he would be breaking a law. But morally I believe he has a ground. When he told me what is happening I was sick to my stomach. He is really a nice chap. A big softie really and he deserves better than that. Someone called me a rat above but I would like to think I am far from it.

Checking an email box is highly invasive but if the trust has already gone from the relationship (and it sounds like it has from the past history) then I don't see the problem with this.

People are very good at ignoring the warning sirens in their head because they don't want to know the truth. A friend of mine worked in a PI's office for a while and she said that in the vast majority of cases they got where a partner 'thinks' something might be going on turned out to be a 5min job to prove the worst (dragged out to two weeks work plus expenses of course).

As mentioned a keylogger installed on the desktop, which are freely available and easy to use, will get the login details.

If it is the worst then you're friend has some options instead of being a putz, if it's all in his head then he can beat himself up about it in private and be extra nice and attentive to his wife for the next 30 years.

As already mentioned, keylogger is probably your best bet.

Or he could try a little social engineering; most people set a very weak reminder question, which will allow you to reset the password on inputting the correct answer. So given that your mate should know his wife fairly well, it may not be very difficult for him to guess the correct answer; or he could just drop in the required question into conversation..... "so what was your first pets name, darling??". Precisely the reason I never answer those seemingly innocuous forum posts (favorite film/favourite food/favourite tv show etc).

Ok, so this method is not as subtle as a keylogger as the password will remain reset so wifey won't be able to login herself afterwards. But tbh, most people simply put this down to it being a free email account, and will reset themselves like nothing has happened. Ok for a quick fix I spose.

Hmmm, not sure about Hotmail but a lot of mail servers will issue and email which can't be deleted for a set period of time saying that the password has been changed/reset. Also you'd need to know the email addy in the first place as well.

Oh and welcome to the site D.R, you should prob say hello to everyone and say a little about yourself ya know, what you ride, where your from, what your first school was, your favorite teacher. That sort of thing

You say she played around before.

Obviously he doesn't trust her, and even if he checks and all is clear, then he STILL wont trust her.

He needs to get out of the relationship, or fully forgive her for the last time (which he hasn't, no matter what he says). Its not doing HIM any favours and he is bound to be treating her differently - which the kids WILL be picking up on.

Simple and logical - pity its not really THAT simple.......

don't do the 'forgotten password' question! it doesn't send you your password as they aren't allowed to print it. It would reset the password, and of course you wouldn't be able to put it back to normal. Gutted for him mate! i hope he can sort it out without snooping.

Easy to use anywhere(work or home) and it only requires plugging in between the keyboard and computer although I never recommend unlawfully gaining access to anyone's personal data:

For a PS2 interface: http://www.gadgetsquick.co.uk/keysha...der-p-352.html
The USB ones are over £100. A cheaper one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tastaturueberw...mZ220049193354

you can just download a program for free. it records every keystroke to a private directory. if anyone thinks one is every being used on them, just hit ctrl alt delete. This is always the shut down procedure to hide it from the task manager.
