One nudge should be enough for them to find out that it's just a flashing LED though, shouldn't it?

If it was my bike, I'd rather trust a big chain, ground anchor/solid object, alarm, datatag, and alphadot than a flashing light

Which is why I use all of the above

well i wouldnt recomend using it on its own, but anything that could stop the little sods is a good thing. i made my flashing light for 50p. i also have an old mobile phone buryed in the underseat storage charging off the battery as kind of a poor mans tracking system... (if you do this use an old phone that you dont care about and make sure you turn off all the ringers

Did you read ride recently? They said alarms aren't useless but actually quite effective.

I do the same here, only, mine charges ONLY when the ignition is turned on. That way, the phone doesn't flatten my battery (yours is probably the same too).

I spent £30 on the Cyclone-C11 alarm, which has it's draw backs, but at least there's some noise to accompany the flashing LED should anyone knock it (now I've made modifications to it).

Alarms are useless? Tell that to the guys that tried to half inch my bike, and found me waving a tape drive at them for setting of my alarm! If it wasn't for the £30 I spent on the alarm, I wouldn't have the same bike now (or at least, it wouldn't be in the same condition if I did).

Think of it like a floppy disk drive for your computer, except this one wasn't inside the computer, it was attached by a cable. They take magnetic tapes (not discs). The one I grabbed when I heard my alarm going off is probably a little heavier than your average house hold brick!

seems a strange thing to wave at someone trying to nick your bike? did you not have a novelity rubber chicken handy?

The thinking behind it was that I assumed there were at least 2 guys trying to have away with my bike. Quick reaction was that I'd throw the 'brick' at one guy, whilst I went at the other. Distraction techniques like that have saved my bacon on more than one occasion.

In the actual event though, there were four guys, and I couldn't get across the road for traffic, so waved it whilst shouting, and they left the bike, and jumped into their van & scarpered. Luckily for me.

I suppose the rubber chicken would of had a similar effect, only not so difficult to catch at high speed. The comical "Wtf is this guy doing?" reaction might work, but I'll stick with blunt heavy instuments thanks!

Anyway...

Just like Northy said.

I have mine through there and wrapped around a the roof support (metal) in the basement garage, nice and tight and off the ground too.

Stick a small disc lock on the rear wheel as well, hamper them wheeling it away (front can be easily lifted)
