Bingo. A lot of people around these parts put London on the very top of the "to-visit-at-least-once-wishlist", and while not in the top of my list, like Dr. Rich said, it will most probably act as a gateway to the other places in my wishlist.

I live up north .... only been to London once many years ago on a school trip. Wouldn't care if I never went again. Give me hills, open roads, and fresh air any day

The main reason is that London is a transfer hub for other flights to other countries. A example is that say a flight from Oz will stop in London and transfer to a smaller craft or simply refuel before moving on to other European and nearby destinations.
London faces regular competition with Paris over this, which one of the reason the extra runway got built at Heathrow. If it hadn't a lot of flights would have lost to Paris (its a nice looking airport to), lots of business to, such as refueling and catering...
