I reckon we should have a separate section where geeks and nerds can geek and nerd at each other... Then the rest of us only heave to go into their section to take the mickey when we feel like it rather than having it forced on us...

Here Here, GUI were invented for people who can't use a command line and vi.

Browser! . what is wrong with lynx

Yes there is a place for running vnc type connections to *nix boxes. mainly because x is bloody heavy on a wide area network. I prefer tight vnc, but don't bother with ssh tunnel as I have proper aes256 vpns to my remote sites.

Erm as I have set myself a task of learning Java and it seems some king of gui dev environment is almost mandatory for that and that I may want to use my Laptop to do this coding, but not necessarily have the full Java Dev environment on it, Remote Desktop to the Linux box set up for that could be VERY useful.

Also the advantage of having Linux with a GUI on a Workstation machine is that (if like me) you are running monitors with native resolutions of at least 1440x900 (Laptop) you can get at least 3 terminal sessions going side by side.

And when your XP box has gone funny, or you need help setting up WiFi, or your not sure which ADSL to go for.

Leave us tech geeks alone - you know that we are needed in the main forum as much as the bike geeks who can tell you exactly how many HP such and such part will add to the bike off the top of their heads

Everyone is a geek about something

In my days we had to telnet to port 80 and issue our requests in http and porn images had to be seen in binary like in the matrix.
