Where our mutual friend had the key could not be found quick that's for certain. It wasn't until I got home that the implications dawned on me. I just wondered if the practice of carrying a spare was common. If it wasn't for the need of the alarm blipper I would consider sewing a spare into my jacket.

Personally, I find that phones are always available wherever I'm stopped.

Doesn't take too long to call someone to bring my spare key from the house out to the bike, should I need it.

Rather not take the risk.

Get it roon' yer neck...get some sort of non-poofy masculine necklace and attach it. That's what I'll do in future...but to my main set of keys. As I am friggin' terrible at losing things.

Maybe you could hide another spare key somewhere so you could open the tank and get that one out.......oh wait.

I'd try to keep it somewhere seperate to where you leave your normal keys. Eg if your normally keep them in your jacket, put the spare elsewhere. That way, if you manage to lose your jacket (or some toerag has it away while you nip to the lav in a pub), you don't lose both keys.

Having it on the bike has another fringe benefit over carrying it on your person- the option to send a trustworthy party to pick up your bike. EG, say you're involved in a (non-biking) accident up at the Aberystwyth meet and your bike is left there as you get whisked away. You could tell me where the key was and ask me to get a lift back there later and take the bike home for you (okay, not me, but someone trustworthy )

My spare is at home as help getting the new key to me wouldn't be too much bother.
