Well- it all points to that now. Cylinder dropping out, bike stuttering and stalling. All cos I went to Tesco to fill up the other week instead of the Shell V-Power I normally used.

I thought it was water getting onto the front sparky, but rode in torrents of rain this morning without a problem- bike was uncovered all night to avoid being blown over again in the winds

. Have filled the tank since with the usual Shell stuff and it's ridden a treat and I can pretty much put it down to just after I filled the tank at Tesco. I did wonder if there was some crap in the fuel, but the mechanic who looked at it diagnosed the charging system- the fact that that was buggered seems purely a coincidence now.

i always fill up with premium and i tend to try and get the 99 octane stuff from tesco (not the crappy 95 normal stuff they have) as even shells v power is only 97. In fact i never use shells stuff as the only time i ever used it it didnt agree with my bike.

as for if there is a difference in the fuel provided by the individual companies the answer is yes there is, they use there own plants to separate out the petrol and then package and market it. The fact that they buy all their distilation set ups and rigs from the same people as all the other companies means that in reallity there is very little between them.

It shouldn't affect the SV as it doesn't have a lambda sensor which is what is causing the problems with the fuel acording to reports... but it did make me wonder as my engine went bang on sunday and has been dead ever since, sometimes firing up on one cylinder for a couple of seconds.

edit: not heard of any other problems in scotland tho

I've been now told that the contamination may be covering the whole uk now, and doesn't just affect the lambda sensor, thats just the main bit affected, so an SV is just as likely to deteriorate... what I dont get is they are saying the contamination wont do long term damage to the engine, how can they say this when they dont know what the petrol is contaminated with, they suspect ethanol, but aren't sure. plus there is the reports of totally ruined engines.. I just cant wait for the conclusion on my bike's damage, (Yes I filled up at a supermarket last week, yes my engine went bang bang, yes it will fire up 1 cylinder for a few seconds before dying, yes I do think the petrol company could possibly be to blame, yes I'm ****ed off!)
