Because it is very common for groups of people who share a common interest to hunt as a pack and persecute people for the sake of it, as they are sometimes insecure and need to belong. It's therefore unsurprising that people who may have been irrationaly persecuted before, test the water to find out how enlightened or otherwise the group are before commiting themselves.
It's a shame really, but the 'only gay in the village' stuff really reflects aspects of homophobia in society as a whole. If society really didn't care, then there would be no point in asking the question, but unfortunately it sometime does.
I have to say from my limited experience the sv.org is an enlightened group, and in general do not tolerate persecution on any account.
Homophobia still permeates society much like racism and many other irrational fears. Least not here to any great degree I've seen, which is good!
