I can't afford to risk it, not just financially but if it happened I know I'd never get it sorted

It's unlikely to make enough difference to properly lean the bike out enough to hurt it. If it was combined with an after market filter and exhaust I'd defiantly get the ECU re-mapped as it doesn't cost much and it's likely to make the engine run better. A lean mix will make your combustion chamber run hotter, keeping an eye on the coulour of the plugs can give you a rough guide to what's going on in there...

When you say "doesn't cost much" what sort of ball park would you guess?

I would quite like to get the bike set-up properly (and if I did I'd be seriously looking at a filter and change of snorkle), but I don't know what I need\want. I thought I'd be looking at the thick end of £500? at which point it's not worth it to me.

Well the 1000sv Snorkel is on order, so I will report back when it arrives if its any better in terms of sound and power.
