Help with Broadband Connection

That's often a local exchange problem. The difficulty you will have is that your ISP leases the line - so BT won't respond to requests to deal with it - you'd have to go through the ISP helpdesk - never a rewarding experience. I had this problem with Orange broadband a couple of times (vfor deveral days) just after I started. Eventually Orange got the problem fixed at the local exchange.

The problem with dropouts only with ethernet connected PCs sounds more like a router hardware failure though.

OK time to start the testing on the master socket and the test sockets

i have to say that connected from the master socket it appears that I can connect to the maximum speed from my provider and its stable as well (for the time being)

so I guess my extension socket was fooked :S

I'll now wire it with Cat5e cable as well so that should be a bit better

just to rub it in! I can now connect to my broadband via my pocket pc - so i'm always here! scary, huh?

Sounds like a classic cause (sorry, couldn't be bothered reading all your connection specs - KISS ).

I've worked with a lot of setups that reported random dropouts in connection. Even some that had no connection at all on one socket, and a connection on another socket.

Always plug your equipment into the master socket if you have any problems, if you're still having problems when wired into the master, investigate it.

If the phone line is crackly, BT have the responsibility to maintain the voice portion of the line.

If the line is severed for example, they have to come out & fix it. The only time you call your ISP, is when your broadband doesn't work. Then they call BT (if needed) & BT come out to do the necessary work.

Baph you're right but I didn't have that problem 2 weeks ago when I got disconnected from my previous ISP hence why I didn't look into that straight away.

Oh yea, when you're routing that CAT5e, be careful of mains power as well. Perpendicular not parallel, otherwise you'll get issues again.
