Personally, I've always had an affinity with Canon.

Get the one that you like best as there's nothing to choose between them. Both companies make fabulous lenses and their CCDs are great too

TBH I'm tempted by the Canon. It's a fine decision as, having handled both in Jessops, they are both terrific bits of kit. What tends to tip it is that I had a AE1 years ago, it was fabulous, well it still is as I still have it. I have no idea whether the old lenses will fit a newie, but I understand that my flash will.

Mr.Jelster still suffering from poorly back? I am hoping your pics are not from your naturist holiday last year?

Mr.Fizz I thinking that pic of Suzuki with flames coming out of it behind is superbo!

The lenses from my old EOS 620 (which is about 20 years old) still fit my new camera, in fact the 50mm f1.8 is now a sought after lens and it fits the top range DSLR's with a full size CCD too...

Not sure about my old Vivitar flash gun though

In the latest issue of Digital Photo they have put the Canon EOS400D and and Nikon D40X up against each other and they basically said to go with whichever on is cheapest on the day because they are both superb cameras. I have a Nikon D40 and absolutely love it. I've found it dead easy to get to grips with and the quality of the shots I've been getting are superb. I was torn between the canon and nikon when I was buying and ended up with the nikon because it was cheaper

Whichever you choose it'll be a good one though!

Generally viewed that the Nikon is better to start with, but will outgrow in time and that the canon is better overall, and will be a camera you'll keep for a long time.
I've got a 400d and love it! However both produce great shots for the price.
