Does anyone rely on hearing things then? I can't say I ever have, if somethings so close you can hear it's engine over your own motor, helmet, wind noise and/or plugs then somethings already gone very wrong with your observation. I still hear emergency vehicles and busses while listening to da toons.

The howl at 14k is the only music I want to hear on my bike.

I listen to really distracting audiobooks, and loads of podcasts. But again - they keep me awake longer on motorways

Never! If I can't see it, there's no need for me to know about it! (And even if you wanted to, with loud exhaust and wind noise, you can't hear much anyway!)

I received a Starcom1 Advanced Kit last week - not yet fitted on the bike but it's tiny and will let you listen to music and do all the rest

I'll feedback once I have tried it

Glancing at a GPS is fine (I never wear the headset) - just treat it like any of your other clocks, IE don't spend seconds looking at the whole screen, just glance at the bit you want to know. Personally I find sound suddenly barked at me far more intrusive and distracting, but horses for courses, I suppose.

I don't ride with music on (apart from listening to the radio on a goldwing I hired) as every time I have something on, it makes me ride a bit faster than I'd like. Again, for some people, it's not a problem, so I suppose it's down to personal taste.

I've never been one for earplugs, but have very recently started to use my iPod on motorway stretches.
Just set the volume so I can barely hear it and it makes a pleasant enough background to the sound of the bike. Not at all distracting.
