Oddly this phenomenon is not very common here in Spain. I think maybe people have more respect for bikes. However I must add that the road accident figures here are apalling as for example last weekend saw 35 road deaths, with 11 of those being motorcyclists. That is a disproportionately high percentage when considering the overall number of bikes to cars.

We are going to be having our bike privileges curtailed before long for sure. On the safety front, from 2010 all new biks will have to have ABS fitted as standard.

Luke, although powering away at lights is fun, and we've all done it. Please be carefull. Boy Racers love to try to get away from lights fast, but the same attitude will also mean that they will run an amber, occasionally a red. The last thing you want is to fast away only to be tee-boned.

I laugh, and lets them get on with it (i probably would struggle past 70 mph). But get my own back through traffic.

I did enjoy, however, my 1st hand viewing spot, on my bike, of my dad pasting a nissan skyline, him riding his gsxr750. was a proper giggle, and the driver was very courtious, letting us past at the next traffic lights

It ****es me off well and truely when people refer to them as 'girls bikes' and say....'when you going to get a proper bike'

I'm starting to love the SV more and more and thinking of getting another bike less and less.

Its just enough and not to much.

Well, you can already ride your SV alot better than many people can ride their gixers, rR1's etc etc. So seek and bath in the satisfaction of riding round the outside of another Rossi-clone on your girls bike

I am another person who hates the "girls bike" tag. I wont ever get rid of my SV, its worth too much to me, what with the topbox and easy to use engine.

And i corner better than some people, too

My personal favourite with boy-racers is to pretend that you are racing... lay on the tank, be side by by them, looking at them to see if they're gaining...
then sit back upright, give them a wave, and disappear into the distance

My take on boyracers is as follows.

Some of them are total n*bs but generally I find there are a higher percentage of n*bs amongst the middle aged German saloon/Evo driving crowd.

Ok a boyracer trying to race your bike is dumb...or is it.

Firstly it could be that they see the bike as the ultimate performance vehicle on the road and just want to get a kick out of how quick it flies off in relation to their car. So in that sense you should be flattered.

Secondly at least they are racing everything instead of deliberately picking their races. E.g. I can be going to the shops in my Clio 182 hot hatch and just minding my own business when a n*b in an M3/Evo will pull up behind and start swerving around and revving because they know they can beat me. Yet if I am on my bike they will stick to 50mph on the dual carriageway, stare straight ahead and pretend I am not there. Now who do you respect the most out of him or the boyracer? At least the boyracer isn't afraid of being beaten and isn't trying to protect his ego.

Thirdly on a car forum yesterday we were talking about the unwritten rules of street racing etiquette. E.g. if someone out drags you on a dual carriageway you should accept defeat and leave it be. Most boyracers will obey that rule. However your average German Saloon/Evo/Impreza STi type will after having been beaten go into a suicidal rage. They will start tailgating or when you slow down they will keep going off over the horizon at stupidly dangerous speeds and risk peoples lives just because their ego got bruised.

Granted there are boyracers that drive just as badly as the middle aged men but in general they are not the worse group.
