Baph, "hacking" in its traditional term would mean "programming" and I although I never clicked on the link, I doubt that any programming has been done by anyone "simply accessing a publicly available website"

Sorry but I'm an old-school "hacker" ... and I think that the term has gradually lost it's original meaning, and taken on one of more sinister proportions thanks to the media.

Heh I stand corrected and I keep forgetting we live in a police state where you can be held without trial or evidence under "terrorism" laws =p, it will be the end of me that will lol.

Ah, you call yourself old-school, but forget about the days before paper punch cards? Tut tut tut!!

"Hacking" in it's original term, merely meant to enginer (either alterations or creations) a system. Generally "hacking" was just altering something to do a task other than it was originally designed - which kicked off the whole Apple vs PC way back before MicroSoft even began.

So yes, I consider this "hacking" in it's original term, perhaps you jumped on the bandwagon a little late? Why is it hacking, because google cached those links, it was just never designed to give out links to CCTV cameras etc.

As for it being taken away from it's original intentions, I quite agree, only I wouldn't call it gradual. Try this link for definitions http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e%3Ahack&meta=

Actually, I thought the initial computer-derivation of the word "hacking" was brought about due to expert programmers being able to "alter" a programs purpose by "hacking" pieces out of punched cards ... however after reading Wikipedia's entry on the term "hack", and finding no mention of this, I can only assume that that definition is myth/folklore.

However when I say "old school", I suppose I meant old school in the MIT/computer sense of the word that was "formed" about the mid 1960s
