If you want it on variable, take it back to the garage and insist that they sort it, and if they didn't use longlife, insist they change the oil and reset the ECU back to variable. Longlife should be the oil recommended by the manual so thats what the garage should be using unless requested otherwise by you.

Some people request non-variable though this is as they prefer to use a cheaper oil and change every 12K, than trust the longlife to go for 20-24K. I have to say having had an engine go pop due to turbo failure at 80K miles and 3yrs and one week (out of warranty!) old on my BMW320d I would now do this as well. The Longlife servicing is there to make the cars cheaper to service and therefore more attractive on a full maintenance lease for the fleet market. Fleet cars are rarely run more than three years or 60-80K miles. If you own it and want to keep it longer, change the oil more regularly.

Don't buy a three year old 3/5 series or X3/X5 diesel thats been serviced on variable. In our office of 55 people, we've had five turbo failures in the last two years on these engines. The dealer blames the 24K service intervals. The press blame the ECU, but who knows? Unless your an expert just avoid like the plague! Renault diesels are the same apparantly. Many of the high power high pressure diesels (2.0 litre and 150bhp for instance) blow turbos. Stop the engine at the first sign of it burning oil and don't start it again.

My BMW burnt the oil from the turbo as if it were diesel and revv'ed uncontrollably until it blew a hole in three pistons and damaged the bores. I wasn't in the car at the time so could do nothing to stop it. Cost £8500 to repair after which it was never right (turbo, manifold, engine, full exhaust system inc Cat and 4 injectors). I had to pay 1500 towards the repair and lost 2 grand on the value 'cos I ended up trading it in rather than selling private as it had so many problems post the fitting of the new engine. All work done by Eastern BMW in Edinburgh.

Now I have a Mondeo TDCi 130, very happy with it, half the cost to both buy and run, just as quiet and comfortable as the BMW and I don't give a sh*t if it gets damaged. No point in running fancy cages when you do big miles. I needed a workhorse. I'll spend the money on a nice bike.

Just in case you need to buy oil for top up, it's no longer called SLX, it's called Castrol Edge.

But note that there are a number of different 'Edge' lubricants, not all of which are suitable, as there were different VW specs for different engine codes.
