BP how much to insure you on an R1 which is comparable to the two cars you mention
Insurance companies aren't muppets, they know who and what are high risks. You maybe the safest rider/driver in the world but the don't assess the risk on a single individual You must have a good job or rich parents to afford things like that at your age [As per profile] |

Comments like this really get on my nerves?! The rover only cost £400! and so what if it cost more. Most of the money I spend is on cars and bikes and petrol, as I love them. I don't buy fancy clothes, fags or trivial things. I don't have a big income and am only young too!! If he were that loaded he wouldnt be paying for his insurance monthly would he?! |

Insurance costs are all about stats on the given car you are trying to insure. Yes, rule of thumb, the more powerfull the car, the higher the insurance. Also the capable damage the car could cause i.e a size off Range Rover! But alot more of the price is to do with the amount of 18 year olds that write them off, whether they are accident prone, stolen lots etc. Which would probably be low on this car? DT, I couldn't afford to learn to drive, tax, insure and buy a car when I did my tests for the bike.
However I payed 900 quid(with some help, then paid back)for a 125 15 quid tax £250 insurance. I sold my bike for a grand, and luckily used some nice shares I'd been given to do the DAS I got a loan for the SV, and it was still all cheaper than getting a car. You know I use the bike to travel to and from work, and for pleasure. For me personally it was a cheaper solution, its only now that I am old, have a better paid job that I can afford to learn to drive, and TBH if I wasn't second driver on the Landy I wouldn't be able to afford to buy a car and insure it. Three years ago I got a quote at age 30 for an old Nissan Micra on insurance, it would cost me over a grand, as opposed to 300quid on the two SVs. I'm not at all surprised younger peeps go for the bike, as its usually ever so slightly cheaper to insure.

Insurance on an 1999 R1 which I got a quote for a few days ago just out of curiousity was 1500 for the year. Took me a while to save for the stuff I have first bike I saved for 4 months geting paid about 400 a month and wasnt spending much after that so i was able to save enough money for a nice TV and another bike come summer time when i was old enough to do my test. Bought the car with the money I got from selling my old bike. Im not on about a newer beemer DT 1996 was about the year I was looking at. Last edited by BanditPat; 29-04-10 at 03:19 PM. |

Fair comment Dizzy but I am looking at the prices some of the younger members are paying for insurance on the SV and it is not much different.
It cost you 900+15+250=£1165 to put a 125cc on the road Decent SV £1500+700ins=£2600 Decent 2nd hand Fiesta £1500 +1000ins=£2500 Take my point, |

A decent second hand Fiesta will cost you the best part of 2k in a lot of cases to insure DT.
Can remember my brothers first car at the age of some of the lads on here, and it was stupid. TBH a fiesta for me would still cost me a grand to insure now, and thats without even looking at quotes.
