Problem with that is when Steve decided to change the way a feature works, you have to pull down your trousers, bend over and take it.

You didn't look hard then - there are tons of DLNA (urgh I feel dirty just mentioning it TBA) servers/clients, its what all the NAS boxes that can stream media use, as well as the Xbox(I think) and the PS3.

Or theres always VLC.

I know what he WONT be launching - security updates for iOS on the iPhone 3G and older.

An iOS 4.3 update, which includes a number of critical security fixes, is incompatible with the still widely used iPhone 3G and older versions of the iPod Touch. The latest version of Apple's mobile software can only be applied on the iPhone 3GSs and later models; the iPod Touch 3rd generation and later models; as well as all versions of the iPad.

Security fixes bundled with the release include protection against the risk posed by maliciously-crafted TIFF image files and security fixes against multiple memory corruption issues in WebKit, the engine behind the Safari browser.

Security firm Sophos warns that the omission of the fixes leaves users of older iPhone and IPod Touches at heightened risk of drive-by download attacks from booby-trapped websites. The latest version of the OS includes tethering functionality and the ability to stream music between devices across home wireless networks, among other functionality improvements.

"There might be a hardware reason why the latest version of the software can't be run on older devices," a Sophos spokesman explained. "Even so, Apple could still release an update for Safari for older devices, the most problematic omission.

"Apple should still produce patches, otherwise security conscious people would have to upgrade."

The handful of malware strains to have infected iPhone devices thus far have only infected jailbroken devices. Although it hasn't yet happened, mobile malware spreading via browser vulnerabilities is a potential threat, Sophos argues.

In related news, Apple also released a new version of its Safari browser for desktops on Wednesday. Safari version 5.0.4 covers a total of 62 security vulnerabilities. Both Windows and Mac users need to update their software.

The vast majority (57 of the 62, by Sophos's count) of the security bugs tackled by the update lend themselves to exploitation simply by tricking a surfer who is running vulnerable versions of the software into visiting a maliciously constructed website, a favourite hacker trick. ®

I'd much rather be a happy sheep than a frustrated geek when it comes to listening to music.

iTunes for me come more like a complete solution that just works out of the box. It comes with OSX and with every iDevice so no need to setup.

Media is neatly organised into a easy to read file structure, each file has artwork, all meta is indexed into a database so I can choose by genre, artist, album, most listened, year etc. The genius mixes even selects music from my library with the same style and makes like a quick and simple private radio.

Each iDevice is synced automatically and I can select which music to pun on each one (no need to store 500+ albums on 4 devices when I'm only listening to 20-30 maybe at a particular point in time).

AirPlay is simply amazing. Get the iPhone or the iPad or even the Laptop, find a tune and tap (click) on which speakers you want it (say Living Room AVR). It starts playing instantly and it could even be PCM streamed if your ears are delicate and would like the best possible sound. It takes longer to switch on the AVR to be honest.

Best part this is already there, no need to do much other than importing / rip-ing your CDs.

And if wife happens to really like the CD I just bought but it isn't on her library just yet, she can instantly play it downstairs straight from my library with no extra setup.

I know all about media streaming, DLNA and NASes. I run a 20TB unRAID media server with 3 XBMC streaming clients on Linux and they all great for video but when it comes to music, I would need discs spinning on NAS, HTPC client running as well as TV and AVR on as opposed to just the AVR in the case of iTunes. That is why I love iTunes so much: simple, efficient and really cheap.

If you would purchase a complete Apple setup to do just that, that would probably be very expensive and a bit wasteful to say the least. But since I already have and use them for many other purposes, the setup didn't cost a thing.

Most expensive part was the music itself and my dedicated time to ripp everything. I won't buy music on iTunes as long as CDs still exist. The DRM ****es me off.

Android "We also urge users to install anti-virus apps to keep phones safe from malware and to run security scans on a weekly basis"

Niceee lol well that's certainly confidence inspiring.

I think it is, rather than the Jedi-esque approach of "There are no possible security exploits, move along".

Any system that allows a user to execute a program that was not installed by the manufacturer opens the possibility of problems with this.

Be it a downloaded app from the marketplace, or an apk downloaded and installed from the web, or some malicious website exploiting a bug in a browser or a nasty flash file (ok so all flash is nasty, I mean one that compromises the phone).

This is one place where Apple DOES win, an un-jailbroken iPhone is a lot more secure than a similar, non-rooted Android phone, right up until someone publishes a vulnerability - like the .tiff execution bug that they patched in the release I posted about a couple of posts ago - which STILL exist on 3G and below as Apple ignored those old, less shiny devices.

They lose all that however as I refuse to be so bound up by their rules.

Oh and to all those with a Jailbroken iPhone, how do you know there is no malicious code in the Jailbreak? - remember that (last time I checked) they left the SSH Server running with a default username and password, who's to say that they didnt hard-code another username and password that starts the SSH server at 3:42 on a Monday morning and sends them the contents of your phonebook...

"The latest version of the Android operating system, known as Gingerbread, is not vulnerable to the exploits DroidDream uses."

Download the Jailbreak from a trusted source, all the jailbreaks come from scene famous dev's its very unlikely that a dodgy JB would hit the scene unnoticed, as I have said before anyone jail breaking should know what they are doing or their research.
The first thing I do once jail broken is Enable SSH change the root user name and password and then disable SSH until I need it.
Which release was it enabled from default ?
