The engine capacity idea is a rubbish one....

Explained:

650cc SV = 75BHP, 140MPH
600cc R6 = 133BHP, 165MPH

1.3 Ford GAY-A = 59BHP, 100MPH
1.3 Mazda RX-8 = 190BHP, ???MPH

Capiche?

At the moment, it would work. All the 500cc bikes out there are slow enough to be learner-suitable.
Not many RG500s left to spoil the sums.
Though maybe not in a few years when manufacturers seized on the idea to produce 500s in higher state of tune.

Ok probably a bad idea there, I did say maybe Stick with 55bhp then. A GS500/ER5/CB500 is plenty to be useful for transport everywhere, but isn't a missile, and nobody says power of one of those will get you into trouble. In terms of top speed performance it's probably pretty similar to many first cars.

I can see more positives with the 33BHP restrictions, than negatives. However:

To make it 'fair' so to speak; they should scrap the restriction altogether, and let insurance companies 'restrict' what bike you can ride - Works well with cars.

IMO if you are competent enough to pass MOD1 and MOD2 then the biking world should be your oyster. And if you are wedged enough to be able to afford to buy and insure a BMW1000RR, then fair play to you my son.

The one little problem with this is the relatively cheap costs of purchasing a motorcycle to a car, therefore making bonkers bike's very accessible. BMW1000RR is the 430 Scuderia of the biking world!

Apprennties dont fall in the same bracket as the normal working

Apprentices

From pay reference periods starting on or after 1 October 2006 the special rules for apprentices will be extended to apprentices aged over 25. This will mean that:
  • apprentices under age 19 will not qualify for the national minimum wage
  • apprentices over age 19 and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship will not qualify for the national minimum wage.
Thats taken from HMRC

When I was on the apprentiecship that i was on last year we were on 80 quid a week for the first year then up to a hundred for a month then up to about 750 for the last few months

i've been that up to date with this in the last few days, but since when could an sv do 140? more like 125, maybe 130 with downhill and wind behind.

What would be interesting would be work out those who have done the 2 years restricted or are currently restricted, and see what they are voting.

In my opinion, someone who hasn't done the restriction, can't really justify a vote.

As for cars, don't ask. Was £1400 TPFT for a measily 100bhp 1.4 corsa, 8 years old, 50K miles, in a country postcode, very low risk. Had a accident, I can't even get insurance for less than 2 grand now.

As for insurance for a young male, its roughly £1 per cc at TPFT. Its not even funny.

Strange how it has evolved into a "costings" thread, but for what it's worth - I firmly believe that the 33bhp rule should only continue to exist if EVERY new rider has to be restricted for the two year probationary period. I fully disagree with it being only targeted at young riders.

There is very little difference between the mentality of a 18yr old and a 21 yr old. If you're a d1ck at 18, you'll still be a d1ck at 21.
