Re: 'Ere 'ere is the EAR Megathread
I fitted the Penske today
It all took loads longer than I had planned for (isn't that always the way?!). I was hoping to get a test ride in before dark but all the rear bodywork is still off to clean up the subframe. The linkages were in good condition and just needed a quick clean and grease, the benefits of 'fling' from the scottoiler! I was pleased that my 'poor mans ABBA stand' worked. I picked up two axle stands for £18 (I'll use them in the future on the Landy for sure) and a length of M10 threaded rod, a few nuts and washers. I put the bike on the paddock stand, pushed the threaded rod through the swingarm pivot and clamped it in place with a washer and nut each side. Then the axle stands went under the rod and the bike was lowered on to them. The rod bent a little but the rear tyre was off the floor, just enough to let it spin, which had the added bonus of not having to manage any drop of the swingarm when the bolts were removed. I has loosened the linkage nuts yesterday and covered them all in penetrating oil so everything came out relatively easily. The old shock dropped out without bother and then I offered up the Penske. Unfortunately the spring on new one is wider than the original so it didn't slot through the gap. To make room I fully jacked up the rear wheel using a trolley jack, and took one bolt out of the side stand bracket so that the cut-out switch would allow the linkage to swing down further. Once that was done everything went together very easily. I ran out of thread-lock so there is one last nut to go on and then the other bits can be replaced. It doesn't look anything special as it's an all black shock but it should be a massive improvement over the stock item. Next on the work list is to rub the subframe down and give it a coat of Hammerite. The rear bodywork is a quick replacement job so hopefully I should be able to give it a test ride on Sunday. And the job after that will be to get a set of linear springs for the front but I'll have to see how much Christmas money is left by next pay day Either that or I'll nip down the A12 and nick Mav's front end while he's sleeping |
