Hovis the key was in what I actually said. For sure have a bit of a nibble at the price, that would be expected, but taking the p*ss with stupid offers to a genuine private seller would boil my p*ss tbh.

Unless youtr telling me I should adopt a real cheap skate mentality?

Well seeing as the thread was specifically about the purchase of a zx9, I would simply point out the fact that it's a zx9! Thats got to be worth a few quid off!

To be honest I cant see the problem with haggling private sellers either. It is your job as the buyer to get the bike or item for as little as possible and it is the sellers job to get as much for it as possible.

When I sell something I start negotiations with a minimum price in mind, when I buy an item I start with a maximum price - thats common sense. I'm alwasys going to look after my interests and the seller should look after theirs.

As long as you are not rude and conduct yourself in an appriate way I cant see anything wrong with responably aggressive negotiation.

Just to pick on a point that pedrosa raised:

The first guy who came to see it bought it. But he could not resist from pushing and pushing on the price. In truth he was really starting to annoy me. I was so close to telling him to f*ck off. But in the end I relented as you just never know if another buyer will turn up.
If you are worried that there wont be another buyer then the chances are your prices were too high in the first place (or you didnt do your research into the market value of your bike).

Overall, when selling something or buying something or in life in general, you need to ensure you are prepared and take responsibility for your own actions as nobody else will.

+1

People making what i would call nuisance offers, ****es me off a treat. Its especially annoying if they spend 20 minutes looking the bike over and asking questions and then make a **** offer.

I think the fact that bikes are often more of a 'luxury'/toy than cars leads to a lot of interest from dreamers.

I find a curt f*** off followed by good day, does the trick.

well i (my freind) made a silly offer, ½ of the asking price. and we ended up getting it for just a few £ more........... a lot less than i would have thought. so i save a few hundred £. so im happy.

its my opinion when buying, start of very low.

sombody did come to buy my CR125 and offered silly money, i said no......... he kept on, so i put the bike back in the garage and told him i was keeping it

I did that to someone who 'came to buy' my RS125. Whilst i may have missed out on selling it, the satisfaction made it worthwhile.

In the case of my last bike I was talking to a guy who lived almost 3 hours away and our communication had gone on for a week or so. I had ,(foolishly) agreed with him a discount of the price in order to prompt him to travel to see it...(my original asking price was €500 below any comparable unit I could find in Spain) none of which included the mods and extras that I was throwing in.

When he arrived he started to waffle on about something that honestly was nothing and he was trying to make a big issue about it. He wanted to further haggle and was pushing for maybe another 2 to 300 euros further off the price. With the extras thrown in he was already getting an absolute steal and he knew it!

Anyways I sliced another €100 off it and he was content. I remained a little peeved as although at the time I really had to sell the bike, I did feel that he had been a greedy c*nt! (pardon my French.) You see it's like why try to screw the seller down to the floor when you know the price it is at right now is a good deal anyway? Brother bikers and all that BS hey?
