I recommend test riding as many bikes as possible.
Same for me, I went looking at almost every bike I could, spent quite a bit of time doing it, was the SV for me, though I had wanted one for a very long time. It was good for me as well. being 0% it meant I could have new bike I would have made the same choice again if I had too.

Its not suprise is it, that I bought my SV well before passing my test Though I saw, sat on it, I was like where do I sign its my bike now!

People know well, how much I love my bike. Its ace

Basically, Fazer is a better bike, yamaha are second only to honda for build quality, everything is of a better standard.
I prefer the comfort and the power on fazer, however SV sounds better (arguably) better looking, just as capable a bike.

Id say they were both pretty good starting points, i'm sure my mate and his fazer lusts after my sv as much as i lust for his fazer, but i don't think id ever swap. Tho its nice to ride once and a while *(hint- ralph)
Sound on the fazer through the new can is sonorous! mmmmm revs.

You can ride it anytime you want mate, all you have to do is ask lol.

The Fazer is pretty ace... It's definately better transport than the SV, I reckon if the build quality was just a little better it could be the perfect commuter. Fun to ride too... But I found the SV a more involving bike, even though it's actually slower it feels quicker. Perceptions of speed and performance are tricky, it's not always what's best that feels best...

I'd have thought the logical next bike after the Fazer would be a Fazer thousand, but then I'm quite biased, I like those

I've been riding bikes for over 10 years and my last bike was a 98 fazer. I fell in love with the curvy sv but didn't fit it, then test rode a pointy in 2006. It felt a lot slower when I first got on, but then as I rode it it really grew on me. The fazer you had to really rag it - not fun in london traffic, but the sv is just sooooo easy to ride. Also the brake calipers became the bane of my life. Ever tried stripping and cleaning 4pots? Give me simple calipers every time. I think the sv is the best bike I've owned.
