They know when 'time's up' themselves Only time mine ever just walked into the cat box was the last time, any other time it was like wrestling an oiled up eel into an egg-cup.  She'd been ill for a couple of months and had had enough. Her face just said "take me away please".

Sorry to hear about your cat. I've lost a few in the past, in particular one who was really special.

Its so hard when you have to make that decision
 We had to let our old dog go just over a year ago...we talk to her as if she were still here though!
