The probable ban at 100+ is really why I tend to stick to just a little less. If I were to loose my licence it would really fudge things up for me.

When I got done for 53 in a 30 I could have tried to wangle out of it (company car etc) but just took it on the chin - I've driven fast since I passed my test, so really they just causght up with me. Fair enough really.

Back on topic, I'll keep an eye out round me then for a cheap SV for sale

It's not an excuse it's a "I'm now a very responsible person who won't do it again I've learned my lesson" line....

Excuse would be something like "I has sudden spasms in my wrist which kept jerking the throttle open"

Not many speed traps halfway down big cliffs if you're on the SV

It's mitigation, which is why they only 'consider' it and it only lessens the sentence. It's not like you get away scott-free; this chap certainly didn't. Likewise mitigation is most effective the first time and diminishes with each repeated offence; it becomes increasingly implausible that "I never usually do anything like this and foolishly indulged a moment's reckless impulse" the fiftieth time you're caught.

Let's be frank, what would the result be if we went to court and were quite honest instead:

"Well, to be blunt your honour, I believe with my level of experience, training and ability, on well maintained modern machinery, on a familiar road, in good conditions with great visibility, with no traffic about, it was quite safe to do 100mph. Most motorcyclists I know ride in a similar manner and no one I know has had an accident primarily as a result of excessive speed, so I remain unconvinced by the state's anti-speeding propoganda. The 70mph limits on that stretch of road are inappropriate in my opinion, hence why I regularly do 100 along there and was caught on this particular day."

Do you think the judge (more likely magistrates) would be grateful for your honesty and openess? Of course not; they'd consider it demonstrated a lack of contrition and up your sentence accordingly. Most people know this and go the other way, exaggerate (or even invent) mitigation to lessen the impact. As you say, briefs often lead them into this (of course, rarely ever actually saying, "you should say x,y,z", more "Do you, or are you planning to do x,y,z, because if you are/were, it might be worth mentioning"). I think it'd be appalling to do this for anything you considered a 'real' crime (IE cold blooded murder, rape, fraud, etc.), but in the case of speeding, it's clear to see how even the most otherwise moral/trustworthy people would be tempted to lie because they don't believe they have really commited a proper crime.
