Well it's supposed to work, there's one that comes to uni occasionally who always seems to be really popular but then I guess that's mainly a performance thing. I'm assuming the hypnotism that goes on in shows etc different to the hypnotism for health problems, addictions and such?

I wouldn't get involved in any of the circus-trickery type of hypnosis, but 1:1 with a qualified, reputable practitioner can work. Basically, they use a relaxation technique coupled with a 'memory-jogger' to train yourself not to repeat habitual behaviour - it's about unlearning stuff. Works for some, but not others.
I'm not a fan of NLP, but that uses some of the same techniques.

True. I went for some to give up fags and it turns out I'm too strong willed to be hypnotised.

Mind you it could have been the whinging, monotonous tone of the bloke trying to be "soothing"!

Only works on "suggestable" people accordingly.
