I might be wrong but didnt the US (pre 9/11) use terrorism laws to combat organised crime?
I know its not the same, but once a law is past there is very little that can be done to make sure it is always implimented correctly (as far as I can tell!)

Simple question:-
How far does society or government go to stop people from breaking the law or catching law breakers.
Is it truely wrong to use surveillance to catch petty criminals, organised criminals and terrorsists.
I reckon that people just don't like being spied on regardless of the reason. Also from what I have observed most people that scream and shout about human rights in the UK are usually just arguementative or doing something that they shouldn't.
Thats my thought for today right or wrong

But completely and utterly unsurprising.

It's not a matter of entirely clueless politicians overusing a given power, but the stunningly simple fact that they have completely lost any sense of serving the public, it's quite apparent that nowadays politics is a service only to itself.
And our last governmentally disastrous ten years has demonstrated that more effectively than anything I could possibly say.

What you have to bare in mind is that this government, in conjunction with Europe, are passing tens of thousands (maybe more?) laws each year. Soon, pretty much anything you do will be against the law. Most of the time this doesn't bother us, as surveillance isn't all encompassing yet.

If it gets that way, at best you'll have local authorities issuing fines like it's going out of fashion. You can already get fines issued by cctv operatives, who film people turning a couple of feet too early into a bus lane before entering a side road, of for stopping to let someone out of the car on a red route, but when you're already stationary in traffic. The beaurocratic fining machine will go into overdrive.

Worst is if central government abuses the law. Then, as everyone will have broken the law at some point, they'll just drag people that oppose them off to prison...
