You can rule out head bearings quite quickly. unload the front so the front wheel is off the deck. The wiggle the forks back and forwards and side to side. Any knocks or notching and you can assume bearings.

Whilst the wheel is of the deck, check the front wheel bearings. This could also cause your juddering.

Scrutineering passed....

Exhaust system has been read its last rites (back to EBAY)

Woosed out in the end and got local garage to give it a final check it over (fix chain, etc) should be picking it up later.

Have also swapped front discs for a MATCHED set which should improve things, & new ball bearings for the headstock (Ball bearings. Not races. Actual cheap round shiny things nostalgia or what?)

So.... at some stage I'll have to shell out for some headers but other than that it's all systems go. (Ish)

Shame the weather isn't inspiring my trackday purchasing impulses - have found some good fleeces/ pipes/ slippers though

So what exactly did the garage do and what did you do?

Just looked out the window. Does look a bit miserable doesn't it. We are in the height of summer.

Christ, hope you are ok, I have visions of an interaction-induced somersault, nothing like that was it??

No huge drama - felt it going and made a beeline for the hard shoulder...fortunatelyish was still near the start of the slip road....

edit: Definitely not an "Improvement" on my original mismatched discs though

Nice. I think you now take the prize of most dangerous mechanical oversite from me - riding with no axel nut. Hope it didn't do too much damage - i'm still not sure how a fork and disk could come into contact, assuming it wasn't aided by a wall
