I often tell people that the .org isnt like a Motorbike Gang - ie if you annoy us, you wont get bricks through your windows, or your kneecaps broken.

We are much more likely to hack your PC and sign you up for SPAM :P

This is now confusing me, I have downloaded the suitable DVD players and have put a DVD in the drive, but when it starts to play it stops before it gets to the menu. Any idea why it would do that?

Do I lack codecs or is there something else going on?

Any idea how I can fix this this... I was really enjoying playing with Linux too...

Mine got called Hector due to initial difficuties getting it to start...

"Hector - don't just stand there - DO something"

(Now due for retirement)

Only Office computer that got named was "Son of Satan" due to the inevitablilty of it destroying removable drives every so often when you switched it on. This failing led to it becoming the TV recording/ whatching computer until the CPU died. (not one of our successes then)

and yes I am bored at work...

So what made you decide to get linux? And what are the advantages of it over windows?

I find that Windows is not very friendly, it kind of sits there and does it's thing and wont let you play.

Linux lets you play and make the machine yours. Also being open source software, you get to try it and use it and adapt it and then send it back if you do something cool with it.

It is developed by users as opposed to a big corporate giant who want your money.

I guess it is the anarchist in me that wants to go open source. Also less virus!

Two or three things for me:

1. I'm so fed up of Windows crashing and you not being able to do anything about it. With Linux, if you're prepared to get your hands dirty, you can fix things yourself/help the OSS dev's especially if you:

2. Compile the kernel and all its packages from source - massochistic? yes, time consuming? Very, frustrating? Don't go there - you can create fantastic new swear words but finally, rewarding? Absolutely. When you finish and your system is humming along taking a fraction of the time to do things when compared the windows xp bloatware...

3. Window managers, consoles *and* mutli desktops

I suppose I'm biased, given that I'm a developer by trade and a geek by nature...

I made it work, or rather my friend Nigel made it work. He came in , sat down and downloaded the codecs and gave me the page of instructions on how to set it up. Thanks Nigel, you are a legend.
