Well everyone was a little spooked at the time, even an MP3 player on a US carrier might have got you shot But most of them are ok now, ask if not sure if it ok, one of my GPS's has a nice top speed of 538 mph

I own a garmin streetpilot 3, i know it's a bit old now but is updateable via garmin website(am running mapsource 6.14.1) it's waterproof and has fittings for the bike and car used it last year in france and was brilliant. get them on ebay for about 40 quid bargain if your not into keeping up with the latest toys. On the downside, it only runs off AA batteries as opposed to the 550 which is rechargeable but with a power lead fitted i've had no problems

I looked at the Zumo and the Tomtom Rider but cost was a big put off.

I started off with a Magellan Roadmate 2200T which is waterproof and cost just over £100. Only problem was the headphone output was really low and as I have it routed through a helmet headset couldn't hear it at all and only had UK maps, so this is now relegated to the car.

So I picked up a Binatone Carrera for £99 from Asda, very slim, full european mapping most in built-in memory but also SD card expandable and included on CD. Headphone output is LOUD (as is the speaker, in town you can easily hear it through helmet and over engine noise.) Sadly its not waterproof, but I have it mounted on the dash protected by the windscreen (the unit did get a bit soggy during a trip to North Wales last week and is fine).

I figured I could replace it 3 or 4 times for the price of a Zumo and Euro maps. Also I hear Asda are pretty good on their waranty returns if it does pack up.

if your planning on using it in a car get the 550, the 550 comes with a car mount, the 450 doesn't, by the time you've purchased a mount for the car, you coulda just bought the 550
