Like previously said, tell her to look at a point on the other side of the road, say a tree or lamp post , near to where she needs to end up and set off,DONT go straight for the turn, give herself 5 metres to start the wheels rolling forward and then lean into the object on the other side of the road and do the turn. GOOD LUCK TOO!!!

OK i recently passed my test, so here goes, if she follows this advice, she will pass (atleast on the U-turn anyway)
before pulling off, right shoulder check, travel one car length, right shoulder check and turn sufficently so by the time you are half way across the road you are totally straight when commencing the turn need another shoulder check (if you were to imagine if she carried along this path she would hit the curb straight on) ok so she is now half way across the road now pick a target further up the road on the left hand side and turn and drive to the target. Follow this method and you will win every time, further tips, keep high revs not excessive, if she feels the bike is going to fall, release clutch to give more power and the power of the bike will keep it from falling. Hope this helps. |

Might be too late to try this but lock bars round, mirrors, shoulder check, lock on target (where you want to be) and deep breath out and go. The deep breath out will naturally relax the arms which is half the problem. Talking nuts? Nope! I had the exact same issue and this nailed it!
Good luck tomorrow! nb650 |

i mastered the turn in the road first time i got on the bike bikes, dont think i did them for the cbt? but the next 2 lessons just went tits up and i couldn't do it, even in the hour before the test i did about 10 and messed them all up, and when it came down to the crunch i just did it, i think i was concentrating too much on being kerb to kerb (which the instructor was keen on) i stopped about a meter from the kerb, but that dont matter its a turn in the road.
definatly agree with the driving forward to get yourself steady first, and the high revs too, i think most people lean in as they turn and than makes them topple |

[quote=Mr Speirs;1587588]One thing that helped me alot was to drive straight for a little bit (maybe 5-10m) it let settle the bike and set clutch revs and brake before thinking about the turn.[quote]

Looking as far round to the right as possible is the best advice by far. Also do a "double take" as my instructor called it. Quick look for the lifesaver and then immediately look right around as you begin the turn.
Everyone puts their right foot down when they mess this up don't they? I know I did. It's so easy to just overbalance. Leaning slightly out and keeping your head up and turned is the best way to stop it happening I reckon, but in the end confidence is the main ingredient, and that only comes from nailing them again and again in practice. |

how do custard
I had the exact same problem prior to my test. Must have tried u-turn 20 times and never once got all the way around without nearly dropping the cb500... My instructor was an ex-army bike instructor from scotland who was straight forward as feck. After watching me make a right hash of it over and over he said "Alright, lets swap tactics... i want you to set off very slowly in first and get the bike moving solely on tick over revs... no throttle, no clutch slippage, no back brake - just the tickover of the engine moving you forward, then start the turn..." first time I went around without any wobbles, drops, and well clear of the curb ![]() This was only at the end of may last year so I doubt it's changed. Could be worth your missus trying this if the instructor will have it? Hope this helps and good luck to her ![]() ![]()
