Axle nut not tight enough?
Once a chain starts to go, I find that it goes downhill fast, time to replace

Only done 8k! Gets pretty well lubed but not a full on clean after every big trip.

Chains tend to stretch over time... Is it a LOT more slack than before you rode to work, or just a little? Is the play still within the allowed wiggle room?

The adjusters pull the axle back, even if the axle nut wasn't tight enough, it shouldn't move forward. Even so, make sure it's torqued down properly. On the older carb'ed models the axle nut is supposed to be 65 nm I think. Not sure about the newer pointys.

Sorry to ressurect this thread, but if I don't have the correct torx wrench, can I still adjust my chain without it?

How to tighten the axle nut to 65Nm without a torx wrench? or is this a no-no?

65Nm is "tight". That'd be about 22kg on the end of a 30cm spanner. Get down to the local auto parts supplier and ask for a "torque wrench" (torx are something else) and you might get a little change from a twenty.

Cheers

A couple of swift grunts on a socket set is about 65 nM , that`s what it looked like at the tyre shop yesterday anyway

Thanks folks, didn't fancy spending £50 on a torx wrench.

Well I found a "torque wrench" at the local screwfix which as suggest is less than £20, so will pick that up tomorrow and hopefully a less slack chain will be a result.

I thought I knew what i was doing with chain adjustment, but I've just adjusted my chain and i'm getting a tight spot when i rotate the back wheel. When i put the new chain on etc i slacked the adjustor bolts right back and pushed the wheel forward and then slowly (soooo slooowly) adjusted it evenly of each side so that the chain was the right tension. Its been fine until the recent adjustment. The chain is well lubricated witha Scottoiler.
Could it be just that its out of alignment or something more sinister?

Thanks
Jim
